Vijayadashami

The Victory Day of Learning - When Knowledge Begins Its Beautiful Journey

What is Vijayadashami?

Vijayadashami means "Victory on the Tenth Day." It's the day that comes right after the nine days of Navaratri, making it the 10th day. This special day celebrates the victory of good over evil and is considered the most auspicious (lucky) day to begin learning something new!

🏆Why is it called "Victory Day"?

📖 In Stories:

  • • Deity Durga defeated the demon Mahishasura
  • • Deity Rama defeated Ravana
  • • Good always wins over evil

🎓 In Learning:

  • • Wisdom wins over ignorance
  • • Knowledge brings light to darkness
  • • Education defeats fear

Saraswati Puja - Preparing for Learning

On the 9th day of Navaratri (the day before Vijayadashami), families celebrate Saraswati Puja. This is when they honor deity Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, music, and arts.

📚What Families Do

  • 🖼️ Place deity Saraswati's picture in the prayer area
  • 📖 Arrange all books, notebooks, and study materials
  • 🎼 Place musical instruments like veena, flute, or harmonium
  • 🎨 Add art supplies, paintbrushes, and drawing books
  • 💻 Include modern learning tools like tablets or calculators
  • 🙏 Pray for blessings in studies and creativity

✨Special Rules

📵 No Reading: On Saraswati Puja day, children don't read their school books or study. It's like giving the books a special rest day!

🎵 Music & Art Only: Instead, they can listen to music, draw pictures, or learn songs about deity Saraswati.

🌸 Decoration: Books are decorated with flowers, especially yellow marigolds which are deity Saraswati's favorite.

Vidyarambam - The Sacred Beginning of Learning

"Vidyarambam" means "the beginning of knowledge." On Vijayadashami morning, young children (usually between 2-5 years old) are introduced to letters, numbers, and learning for the very first time!

✍️The Beautiful Ceremony

1

Morning Preparation

Children wake up early, take a bath, and wear new or special clothes, usually in yellow color (deity Saraswati's favorite).

2

Prayer Time

Family prays to deity Saraswati, asking for her blessings. They offer flowers, fruits, and sweets to the deity.

3

The First Letters

A knowledgeable person (like grandparents or a teacher) holds the child's finger and helps them write their first letters in rice, sand, or on a slate.

4

Special Words

The first thing written is usually "Om" or "Hari Sri Ganapataye Namaha" - asking deity Ganesha (remover of obstacles) to help with learning.

5

Celebration

Everyone celebrates with sweets, and the child receives blessings and sometimes small gifts like books or learning materials.

🎯Modern Vidyarambam

Today, some families also introduce children to computers, tablets, or even musical instruments during Vidyarambam, making it relevant for modern learning while keeping the traditional spirit alive!
